Co-founder & Managing Editor, SMITH magazine, www.smithmag.net
SMITH is an online magazine devoted to personal media and storytelling in all its shapes and forms. Led strategy, created business plan to land seed funding. Planned, designed, developed and maintain all SMITH Web sites. For SMITH, also designed and produced the Web site for the popular and acclaimed Web comic, Shooting War (www.smithmag.net/shootingwar).

Online General Manager, Portland Monthly Inc.
Manage all aspects of online strategy, marketing and management for all of Portland Monthly’s print titles, including Portland Monthly, Seattle Metropolitan and Portland Monthly’s Bride & Groom. Currently leading a project to rebuild all of the Web sites on a new custom-designed software platform built with Ruby on Rails. This new platform is being built from scratch and is tailored to the unique needs of the business, staffers and readers. There’s currently no magazine Web site like it, and I think it’s going to kick some serious ass.

For Helloindie, plan, write and design each bimonthly issue of the email zine. Developed custom scripts to create a magazine-style email newsletter production system, based on Wordpress.

Planned and coordinated ecommerce strategy for a design-focused media startup. Helped shape editorial strategy as it related to both content and ecommerce. Also coordinated infrastructure development by recommending technologies and interviewing integrators.
March 1998—December 1999
Co-founder, Skoodles Internet, Inc.
Started the first children’s Internet service � a closed network filled with the best children’s online content. Developed business plan and raised more than $1 million in funding. Formed core team that includes a former founder of Nickelodeon and a former president of BBC Americas. Directed technology development with Oracle and IBM.

Technology Editor, Wired magazine and Wired News
At Wired magazine, edited six sections as well as feature stories, and contributed stories for all sections of the magazine. Developed the first Wired Tools, a 24-page special year-end product supplement that grossed over $1 million in its first year. Previously served as copy editor and production editor, coordinating production issues between editorial and design departments.
At Wired News, directed technology coverage for Wired Digital’s Web-based daily news service. Assigned and edited all stories while supervising a staff of 3 full-time reporters and stringers.

Developed a multimedia presentation tool (predates the Web) for the sales force of a Fortune 100 beverage producer. Also worked on numerous consumer goods marketing projects for various clients, including Pepsi, Nestle, and Spreckles.

EDITING AND WRITING CLIPS

At Wired magazine, edited six sections of the magazine, including Just Outta Beta, Fetish, Reality Check, Raw Data, Nicolas Negroponte’s column and Geek page. During this time, contributed stories for all sections of the magazine.
Supervised the first Wired Tools, a special products section in the December 1997 issue that featured 101 products. This project involved planning, assigning and editing all stories for the section, as well as assisting the design department in the procurement of product samples and helping with the photo shoot.
After Wired magazine, served as Technology Editor for Wired News, a daily news Web site. Here, directed all technology coverage, managing a desk of three full-time reporters and numerous stringers. During this time, the technology desk published an average of three stories a day and 15,000 words per week.
