Helloindie

helloindie.png
Helloindie is a biweekly email zine about the DIY craft revolution. It began its life designed to be a print publication, but with limited funding available and the magazine market tightening, I decided it would be prudent to redirect efforts to an online product.

Being an ezine allows the magazine to grow at a more natural pace, letting us explore the vibrant DIY craft scene (a moniker denoting its difference from the traditional American craft movement) at our own pace.

I built the backend using open source applications, including DADA Mail and Wordpress. I customized Wordpress to serve as a magazine-style newsletter generator, after not finding suitable newsletter creation options out in the market. This way, I get to leverage the powerful multiuser environment of Wordpress to write and edit articles, while having custom control over the newsletter template, from images to colors. I can also easily update template design if I want. Once I’m ready to publish out a newsletter, I simply copy and paste the generated code into DADA Mail and send it.

It seems somewhat complicated, but I find that complexity often leads to the simplest solution.

Shooting War

May 30th, 2006  |  Published in Professional Projects

shootingwar.png Shooting War is an online graphic novel serialized over 8 weeks and SMITH’s first original content production. Again, as with most every SMITH project to date, I designed and built the site (on top of Wordpress).

There’s some customization behind the scenes to faciliate easy publishing of each weekly chapter. Once the panel graphics are finalized, I do some resizing, upload all the necessary files, and generate thumbnail images and the chapter’s html code. Everything on the homepage is dynamically inserted, including weekly Flash intros, splash graphics, and chapter thumbnails. We can also customize which comments we’d like to highlight on the homepage.

Davenetics.com

August 28th, 2005  |  Published in Professional Projects

davenetics.pngDavenetics is the home of noted media and politics blogger Dave Pell. He needed a complete rebuild of his site, combining multiple blogs into one and adding a customized news aggregator.

I put together a highly customized install of Wordpress and then had to make sure that all old requests were being forwarded to the new pages. As part of this process, I hacked up a different Blogger to Wordpress import script, which retains the unique permalink structure that Blogger uses. There was lots more plugin-y goodness I created for Dave’s site, and I came to really appreciate the Wordpress architecture, which beyond any flaws it might have, makes an extremely worthwhile trade of efficiency for extensibility. It’s certainly not perfect, but it’s very nice.

newsmonger.pngAlso part of this project was a news aggregator. I have built these myself in the past, using a separate Wordpress install as a base. This time, I chose to work off of RadGeek’s codebase, and tweak it in several ways that I like. I then added a few functions to customize the workings of the site, and a script to expire items from the database, since it’s not meant to be an archive of other people’s work anyway.

SMITH magazine

November 14th, 2004  |  Published in Professional Projects

smithmag.png
(ongoing) SMITH is an in-development online community/magazine and upcoming print magazine. It’s a magazine about personal stories in all their myriad forms, as well as about the explosion of personal media in general.

I’ve been involved with SMITH and founder and friend Larry Smith, for more than two years now. We’ve already gone through three versions of the Web site, which has helped greatly in expanding my knowledge of Wordpress as a CMS. Everything SMITH has been built by me. Larry gets the content, I make it presentable. :) Beyond that, I’ve contributed to editorial and business development planning. Right now, it’s a labor of love, like it should be.

dogster.png
(ongoing) Dogster is the Web’s leading pet sharing service, where every dog has a Web page. Provided: Design and graphic development for new site features.

Dogster is run by my friend Ted Rheingold who took a brilliant little idea he had and ran with it. He just won a 2005 Webby for the site and is busy working to transform the online community into a real business. It’s a sweat and toil story, as he’s already had offers to sell out, but he believes that he’s in the best position to grow the site while respecting its users. I think he’s right.

dogster_blog.png
To date, I’ve pitched in with some simple graphic design, helping create icon sets for new functionality on both Dogster and Catster, as well as linking buttons. I’ve also designed and built two blogs as well. I’m hoping to be able to continue this work in the future, simply because it’s nice to work on something with such a positive and fervent community.

ATP Solutions

November 14th, 2004  |  Published in Professional Projects

atpmail.png
(2001-ongoing) ATP Solutions offers a robust Webmail solution for ISPs and individuals who require a more powerful offering than Hotmail. Provided: Web site design, content, and development; program design and user interface; marketing and customer service collateral.

ATP Solutions is run by my friend, Alex Hart, out of New York. Alex and I have been collaborating on ATPmail for several years now, ever since he decided to turn the web-based email project he hacked together for use while traveling internationally into a business.

We’ve gone through several generations of designs and interfaces, continually incorporating new features as Alex dreams them up. The program now includes powerful spam filtering, an address book, calendar and task management, file storage and more.

Best of all, the program incorporates all this functionality into the main interface (which was no small trick). This makes it an extremely powerful program since an amazing amount of functionality sits at your fingertips. In most cases, there’s several ways to perform any one function, making it very easy for users to get around and get comfortable with the program.

As for programming, ATPmail is very advanced and relies on tons of javascript code, allowing it to run very fast without having to go back to the server every single time you click a button. In fact, the only action that takes any time is when you initially load the program. For example, ATPmail loads your entire addressbook when you login, and accesses the information using javascript, creating powerfully fast searching and autocomplete features (the program will guess who you mean when you start typing an address, for example). When new mail arrives, the entire mail list page is not refreshed, rather the new information is simply added to the page, meaning only the necessary information is transferred. This makes ATPmail easy to use, even on a slow dialup connection.

ATPmail does not use the new AJAX functionality touted by many developers because it’s really not appropriate. However, it has been using a close cousin for many years, the hidden iframe. What this method allows ATPmail to do is communicate efficiently in the background, creating that “application” feeling, but maintain common Web browser functionality—like a functioning back button—that users expect. The problem with AJAX is that if you did hit the back button, you would lose your current application state, in other words, the application would refresh like you just arrived. ATPmail avoids this pitfall by using hidden iframes that respect the back button, meaning users don’t find themselves bumped out of the application if they happen to hit the wrong button.

Because of our close collaboration over the years, Alex and I often work together on other projects. His valuable expertise in programming has allowed us to take on complicated projects that other small developers wouldn’t dare touch. In fact, with Alex involved, it’s actually easy to say to a client that we can do anything they want. There’s not many times you can say that with conviction.

NAHREP

July 1st, 2004  |  Published in Professional Projects

(ongoing) NAHREP NYC is the New York chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals. Provided: Web design and development.

NAHREP came to Alex and I needing everything. I think I even whipped up some letterhead for them. Being a new chapter of a national organization, they were short on resources and Web expertise. So we needed to find them a solution that would be easy for them to manage. Oh, did I add that they wanted the site to be bilingual?

They needed a site that was easy to manage, would incorporate photo galleries, news, events listings, and could switch between English and Spanish.

We decided that simple was better, and I had been playing around with Wordpress on several other projects, including this blog. Wordpress is a blogging tool, but it also can serve as a basic content management system, plus the Wordpress community has created a slew of great plugins to enhance the program’s functionality.

Thsi project involved modification of the Wordpress editing interface to tailor it to the client’s needs, as well as creating the functionality for the bilingual site. While there were several great plugins available that were close to what we needed, we found ourselves writing custom functions in just about every case. The bilingual functionality required extensive modifications, but we were able to create this within the Wordpress plugin framework and not directly modify any core application code (meaning that the site will be easy to upgrade).
